Sugar Tongue Slim(STS) is continuing his upward climb and becoming more of a known name. The Roots affiliate whom Creative Beach first saw at the very end of 2009 rip a verbal hole in the stage in D.C. was contacted by Nike for their web series “The Ones”. STS talks about his beginnings as a poet, the city of Philadelphia and his love of sneakers or as he puts it “If it doesn’t have a check, it ain’t right”.
Sneaker Heads Unite! …A fresh pair of dunks please
It is going to be 46 degrees here in the DMV this Saturday but mental vacations are always encouraged at Creative Beach, you can hop across to London and then take a quick trip to Jamaica all on one album which was released by newcomer Hollie Cook. Hollie Cook is a London born and bred singer that by her own description sings “tropical pop”. The fact that she sings is definitely a family trait being as though her father is Paul Cook of the Sex Pistols. Maybe Hollie will lead the way for “tropical pop” the way the Sex Pistols carried the Punk rock flag(the Union Jack I may add) proudly. Wherever Miss Hollie’s career takes her, her self-titled LP is a great start. Check out the official video of the single “Body Beat” below.
Mark de Clive-Lowe brought his ever popular Jazz mash-up show “Church” to NYC this past Saturday during the CMJ Festival week. “Church” is a live jazz show with a combination of straight ahead jazz, singers, rappers and DJ sets, in short it’s a party. Creative Beach was in the place to be and here’s a snippet of how Mark de Clive-Lowe does “Church”.
Make sure you download the Church Anniversary Mixtape, download HERE
Occupy Wall Street as protests and now a movement has been around for almost a month now. Okayplayer TV caught up with Talib Kweli as he spoke on the now famous “People’s mic” at the Occupy Wall Street protests in Manhattan.
Summer will not return for another 9 months or so but why not keep it going with this Green Street released Free LP. Everything about this album just says sunshine and happiness. Sunshine and happiness can definitely be carried throughout the year but we all long for the days of shorts, t-shirts and rocking shoes with no socks(yeah you put powder in them). I love rocking my northface coat but feeling the warmth of the sun on my face is equally as high on my love for the seasons. Stream the album and download Endless Summer, you’ll thank me in January.
The Black Sunn & 810 are two MC’s I am happy to present to the world. I sometimes stroll these internet streets to get out an about and see what’s going. As much as Creative Beach covers the world it always starts at home. Home for Creative Beach is Maryland, “the DMV” region and The Black Sunn and 810 hail from Baltimore which is definitely a heavily underrated hip hop city. Washington, D.C. has received much more exposure but the largest city in the “M” part of the region is making more noise and making the region as a whole stronger. I first saw The Black Sunn and 810 open for Pac Div last year and I was pleased because all of the opening acts were solid and The Black Sunn and 810 stood out. Here is a single that many can relate to, while it is championing their musical focus, it’s also pushing the fact that well…”I don’t care” about B.S. People take note, and press play on the official video for the single “I Don’t Care”.
A young man we featured just a short while ago is moving along quickly. London MC AKS had his video premiered on Okayplayer earlier today. We figured we’d continue to spread the love and show of support as well and highlight it here at creativebeach. The video lends itself nicely to AKS’ already heart felt lyrics. Listen to the lyrics and watch, regardless of where you are from, this sentiment is understood.
