Jazz Sunday: Gracias x Joy Denalane

Posted by on Sunday, 15 April, 2012

It has been a while but Jazz Sunday is back! It didn’t go anywhere but today here is an OFFICIAL Jazz Sunday post. Jazz Sunday has been very sparse in 2012 but there has been a lot going on behind the scenes here at Creative Beach, oh! It’s all good, it just takes up time but yes this Jazz Sunday is well worth the wait! There is something old but hopefully new to you and there is something brand new, new to us all! Today Creative Beach is going to smooth it out and then get you up and dance. Creative Beach is staying in Europe for this post and first up is CB MC of the moment Gracias. Gracias has definitely moved me and I know his music will make it to a sizable crowd here in the states but music is global and the world is at our fingertips(thank you Youtube). Let’s smooth it out to a live performance Gracias did last summer at the Bassline festival. This vid has been on the CB social network scene but here it is for the masses.

Alright, are you all ready to get your two step on!? Here is a brand new Joy Denalane vid from the English version of her album “Maureen”. If you have been following Creative Beach, Joy Denalane has been a regular feature on Jazz Sunday and this just a continuation. A live band and feel good music, this is the flip side of Jazz Sunday, it’s all about putting a smile on your face.

Creative Beach never let’s you go before giving you more, two videos just won’t do. Here’s another video from Gracias ft. Ekow, boom bap with a smooth feel, you know what Creative Beach is about!

Jazz Sunday: Robert Glasper’s “Black Radio” Week Recap

Posted by on Sunday, 4 March, 2012

Robert Glasper’s “Black Radio” was released this past Tuesday and he has had the internet talking ever since then. As I type the  album is currently #6 on itunes top 10 albums chart. Now Creative Beach has been hyping this up since early January when “Afro Blue” dropped like the best thing I’ve heard in a while! I don’t know what it is but there was seemingly a movement behind this album. After hearing the singles I can’t say that every song on this album is nothing less than good and then there is great like “Afro Blue”. In early 2012 people are still saying that “people don’t buy music”, Megaupload was shut down and file sharing is poised to become some new international crime with secret agents tracking people down. Well yes this is one album but I think “people” have it wrong. Robert Glasper’s album is selling for $6.99 on itunes! Honestly I was shocked at the low price! I was going to support regardless, Adele is doing something almost un-imaginable that is going Multi-Platinum and people are still Watching the Throne. In my opinion people have never stopped buying music, they just stop hoarding it and looking for quality or what moves them the most. Robert Glasper is a Jazz artist and he has a top 10 itunes charting album. If this decade continues on the musical path we’re on now kids coming of age will have a lot to smile about. Oh! Nneka released her album the same day, so did Estelle and everybody is waiting impatiently for Esperanza Spalding’s latest. Check out some highlights from this week that has been largely about Robert Glasper. Happy Jazz Sunday!

Los Angeles Times Review:

The Robert Glasper Experiment’s “Black Radio” is a who’s who of modern black singers and rappers. “Black Radio” — an imagining of what radio might sound like if it weren’t for constricted notions of race, art and commercial viability — takes a page from classic Quincy Jones albums (“Sounds … and Stuff Like That”; “The Dude”) as well as the Jazzmatazz collections helmed by the late hip-hop legend Guru. Nia Andrews is a name that Creative Beach became familiar with through her frequent Mark de Clive-Lowe collaborations and whose music I got to know even more when I saw her perform at CMJ last October. The Revivalist just did a piece on her and as always Jazz Sunday shows love and support to the other Jazz focused media outlets here in the internet land. Although before you get the scoop on Nia Andrews check out some of her music below.

Head over to The Revivalist and read up on Nia Andrews

Clear Soul Forces “Get No Better” Official Video

Posted by on Friday, 27 January, 2012

Clear Soul Forces…Clear Soul Forces…when I heard the name, I thought these guys have to be good. A name like Clear Soul Forces invokes goodness and guess what!? They are good! Their brand new video “Get No Better” hit the website/blogosphere world today and if this is the direction the crew of 4 is going to take they will continue to gain A LOT more fans. I could have saved this for Jazz Sunday but for so many Friday’s are chill, laid back(trust I know weeks are long) so this fits as well. Clear your mind, your soul and take in the forces, the Clear Soul Forces.

I think my question is answered…Crooklyn Dodgers   Clear Soul Forces

Ok, now The Crooklyn Dodgers

Jazz Sunday: Robert Glasper “Black Radio” album breakdown

Posted by on Sunday, 8 January, 2012

This past week has been full with Robert Glasper singles. The album “Black Radio” is shaping up to one of the best of 2012 and we are only into day 7. The good people over at The Revivalist talked to Mr. Glasper and he gave the inside scoop on how the album was made:

It’s only inevitable that a young jazz cat with a penchant for hip-hop and soul whose short list of friends and musical co-conspirators include the likes of Q-Tip, Ledesi, Mos Def, and Erykah Badu would someday make an album with a little help from his friends. “[Executive Producer] Eli [Wolf] always said we need to do an album with all the people I interact with,” says Glasper. “We just had to do it at the right time.” For Glasper, that day has finally come. The result is Black Radio: a robust, funky, intricate collection of collaborations whose closest cousin would likely be jazz trumpeter Roy Hargrove’s 2003 release The RH Factor: Hard Groove. “This is more of a crossover record, so I was concentrating on songs. I wasn’t soloing all over the place,” Glasper admits. Continue to read HERE

This is the first Jazz Sunday of 2012! Welcome back, welcome to newcomers, welcome to everyone. I am absolutely excited to present to you all Esperanza Spalding’s latest album “Radio Music Society” which is set to be released on March 20th through Heads Up International. The album is a follow up of sorts to her hit album “Chamber Music Society” which saw Ms. Spalding receive a 2011 Grammy for best new artist(deservedly so). The album is packed with quality features including vocalists  Algebra Blessett, Lalah Hathaway and  Gretchen Parlato just to name a few. Also Q-tip will be featured on two songs which he produced. Q-tip tweeted back in late 2010 that he was going to produce Esperanza’s entire album but two songs!? Creative Beach will take it. It goes without saying that Radio Music Society is a much anticipated release. Here is a snippet of the official press release posted on Jazz Times:

On March 20, Heads Up International will release Esperanza Spalding’s new album,Radio Music Society. Each of the 12 album’s songs is accompanied by conceptual music videos. Shot in various locations including New York City, Barcelona and Portland, Ore., all videos will be available to purchasers of Radio Music Society< as a digital download or a DVD on the deluxe version.  Continue to read HERE
